UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MEDICAL AND VISION INSURANCE

One common question our patients have when they come into our office is “what’s the difference between medical and vision insurance?” A lot of times, medical insurance policies (especially those provided by employers) will also come with vision insurance, but figuring out what’s covered by which policy can sometimes be a challenge.

Generally, your vision insurance will cover one eye and vision exam with your optometrist each year, along with some coverage for corrective lenses and frames. Some plans may also provide coverage for contact lenses, but not all do.

As part of your annual eye exam, our eye doctor may perform a screening to test for certain conditions in the eyes. If something is discovered, such as cataracts or glaucoma, this is typically covered by your medical insurance and not your vision insurance. The same goes for medical conditions that can affect the eyes, such as pink eye, complications from high blood pressure and diabetes, and headaches or migraines.

Simply put, most vision insurance plans will only cover routine exams and corrective lenses; beyond that, your medical insurance kicks in and any applicable co-pays or deductibles will need to be paid.
