Fruits & Veggies and How They Impact Vision: More Matters Month

OUR OPTOMETRIST IN ASHBURN DISCUSSES FRUITS & VEGGIES AND HOW THEY IMPACT VISION

Almost everyone has heard about carrots being good for your eyesight. But did you know your eyes can benefit from a whole rainbow of fruits and vegetables? At Optics&EYECARE we’re joining with leading nutritionists to celebrate September as Fruits & Veggies: More Matters Month. The right combination of vegetables and fruits in your diet is crucial to good eyesight, and we’re encouraging all of our patients to find creative ways to add more to every meal they eat.

THE BEST FOODS FOR EYE HEALTH

Wearing sunglasses outdoors and limiting computer time are all sensible parts of good eye health, but so are eating the right nutrients that help to prevent eye diseases. Certain fruits and vegetables contain chemicals called antioxidants, which work to support healthy eyes. From breakfast to late-night snacks, you can find a wide variety of choices to add to your diet from the list of eye-healthy vegetables and fruits. Some of the most crucial antioxidants are:

  • Lutein, which can be found in eggs, leafy green vegetables, peas, and broccoli

  • Vitamin C, which is abundant in citrus fruit, but is also in red and green bell peppers, tomatoes, and red berries

  • Vitamin E, commonly found in avocados, whole grains, vegetable oils, and nuts

  • Vitamin A, found in carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, and eggs

  • Zinc, in red meat, poultry, seafood, dried beans, and dairy products

  • Essential fatty acids, which are in soybeans, walnuts, salmon, and sardines

To get the best nutritional value from fruits and vegetables, aim to eat a variety of colors. Fill half your plate with vegetables and fruits, and the other half with protein and grains. This is a naturally healthier way to eat for both weight control and body health, as well as being a nutritional bonus for your eyesight.
